The Carnot Institute: XLIM

Editorial

Xlim obtained the Carnot label in 2007. This label is allocated for a four year renewable period to public research structures (Carnot institutes) that simultaneously carry out upstream research activities, aimed at renewing their scientific and technological skills and a voluntary policy as regards partnership research for the benefit of socioeconomics.
The Carnot label aims at encouraging the development of partnership research between the public French laboratories and businesses by, on the one hand, developing the laboratory’s attractiveness in relation to businesses and, on the other hand, by encouraging researchers from the laboratories to go and meet these businesses and their expectations. Today, the label has been awarded to 33 Carnot institutes which include more than 12300 permanent staff (i.e. about 12% of public French research). Every year they receive 6000 PhD. students and cover most technological fields of research. While resolutely setting themselves at the heart of important economic and social issues, they carry out nearly half of France’s partnership research. For more information, consult the Carnot Institute Association website.
