Students

MA students: to cultivate and develop your potential,
join XLIM to prepare your thesis!

Why choose to write a thesis at the research institute XLIM?

XLIM is ready to welcome you in order to offer a genuine springboard towards your professional life. This institute brings together the activities of conception, modelling, manufacturing and characterisation and benefits from an international reputation in high-tech research fields such as:

  • Telecommunications,
  • Space
  • Micro and Nanotechnologies
  • Mathematical treatment of information
  • Information security
  • Scientific calculation and image synthesis (…)

with departments of excellence in Microwave technology, Photonics, Electro-magnetism and Cryptography and also emerging sectors such as protection of information systems.

You will learn how to work as a team but also how to develop and assert your own scientific autonomy. Supported by ‘leader’ enterprises, you will take part in industrial contracts; develop privileged contacts with the industrial world as well as that of Higher Education. The publication of your work in scientific journals and the participation in national and international conferences will provide you with the opportunity to share your ideas with other researchers, to make yourself known in the scientific community and to perfect your knowledge of English. Moreover, within the framework of the Ecole Doctorale Sciences Technologie et Santé,
each PhD. student will be given training related to job searches, awareness of social rights, business creation and management…

Recruitment

The young scientists that are recruited to write a thesis within the Xlim institute come from 2nd year Research Masters ‘Circuits, systems, micro and nanotechnologies for high frequency and optic communications” and from “Cryptis” (Mathematics, cryptography, coding, calculations) of the University of Limoges, as well as Master Degrees from other French universities and from equivalent training courses abroad (Lebanon, Algeria, The Ivory Coast,Maroc…).

Here is an evaluation of the number of registrations for 2nd year Masters students in ‘Circuits, systems, micro and nanotechnologies for high frequency and optic communications” (THEO) over the last four years:

Year 2004 2005 2006 2007
Number of registered students in Research Masters Degree 36 30 38 31
Number of registered students in Professional Masters Degree 20 15 13 17

For the Cryptis Masters Degree:

Year 2001 2002 2003 2004
Number of registered students in Research Masters Degree 10 10 9 13
Number of registered students in Professional Masters Degree 19 17 16 25

Each student writing a thesis is financed with a minimal amount of about 1000€ net which assures him with material autonomy for the duration of his thesis. It is either provided by the Ministry of Education and Research (Research Allocation), from the Limousin region (grant), fund that comes straight from the research team, or even from contracts with enterprises (CIFRE). The evaluation for the last four years is the following:

Becoming a student

For the most part, PhD students who have finished their thesis find job opportunities in the industrial branch (THALES, ALCATEL, ST MICROELECTRONICS, PHILIPS, FRANCE TELECOM, EADS, HELLIP) as well as in Higher Education and research (Conference masters, Research manager for the CNRS, Research engineering,…).
