Multifunction Antennas

The multifunction antennas project deals with new and original solutions for antennas working at high frequencies: microwaves, millimeter waves and terahertz waves. Its expert know-how speads from electromagnetic modelisation (FDTD, array synthesis, ...) to characteristics measurement in anechoic chamber and engineering design.

Three main axis of research

  • very small antennas
  • beamforming
  • EBG Antennas (Electromagnetic bandgap antennas)

millimeter compact range

The research department uses powerful tools of simulation and two antenna ranges:

  • one microaves antenna range (500MHz - 12GHz)
  • one millimeter compact range: (8GHz - 70GHz)

Small and multifunction antennas

Optmised size: telemetry, in-car and on-board applications

Multifunction (GPS, GSM, DCS, ARGOS beacon...)

  • wire-planes, embedded, printed
  • bi-frequency, bi-mode
  • pattern and polarisation diversity

Beamforming (passive and active)

Point-to-point communications, point-to-multipoint communications (LMDS).

High rates and broadband antennas.

Increasing gain, Low cost, optimised size.

  • multibeam using Butler matrix (40 GHz)
  • arrays, beamforming
  • flip chip interconnections

"EBG" active and passive Antennas

Optimised size (along one dimension)

Good ratio gain/dimensions

Easy source adjustment

Multi-polarisation/frequency, directive antennas...

  • EBG dielectric (periodic structure 1D, 2D, 3D)
  • Gain 20dB, 27dB, 30dB,...
